There’s something pretty incredible about coastal plants. They’ve evolved over thousands of years to handle some of the harshest conditions. Salt-laden winds, sandy soils, blazing sun and long dry spells, all with ease and confidence.

These aren’t fussy plants. They’re hardy, sculptural and seasonal, and when you plant them where they truly belong, the garden just makes sense. Since designing and building my own coastal garden with plants that naturally wanted to be there, the space feels softer, more grounded and far more alive with birds, insects and movement.

That’s really at the heart of how we think about coastal gardens: working with the landscape, not against it.

Here are six of our favourite coastal species, true heroes of the seaside garden, shaped by the conditions rather than fighting them.

Coastal Banksia (Banksia integrifolia)

Layering Style: Canopy

This tree helps shape the entire structure and microclimate of the under canopy. Use it as a statement tree to introduce height and texture, planted sparingly in groups of one or three depending on the scale of the garden.

Description:

An icon of the Australian coast, Banksia integrifolia brings height, drama and incredible wildlife. Its golden-yellow flower appear almost year-round and are irresistible to honeyeaters, lorikeets and native bees making it one of the most ecologically generous plants you can grow.

Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea)

Layering Style: Sculptural Accent

Use very selectively. Think of these as punctuation points rather than filler.

Description:

Few plants make a statement quite like the Grass Tree. One of Australia’s most ancient and iconic species, Xanthorrhoea is a living piece of natural history. Growing just one centimetre of trunk per year, meaning a mature specimen with a metre-high trunk may be over a hundred years old.

Moonah (Melaleuca lanceolata)

Layering Style: Screening 

Your primary wind filter and spatial divider. Let it grow a little loose for character rather than over-formalising it.

Description:

The Moonah is the quintessential coastal tree of Australia. Twisted, rugged and beautiful, it forms dense windbreak thickets in some of the most exposed coastal locations on the continent. Its dark, furrowed bark and small white flowers are highly distinctive and its dense canopy provides critical habitat for birds and small animals.

Coast Pomaderris (Pomaderris paniculosa)

Layering Style: Shrub Mass

This is doing most of the visual work. Clip into low mounds or keep relaxed, however we suggest you repeat in groups of three for cohesion.

Description:

Underused and utterly beautiful, Coast Pomaderris is one of our favourite recommendations for gardeners looking for something a little different. In late Winter and Spring it erupts in clouds of tiny yellow flowers that are breathtaking and highly attractive to native bees and other pollinators.

Poa Grass (Poa poiformis)

Layering Style: Texture

Poa works beautifully as a border grass, mass planting across a slope or a soft contrast to more structural plants like the Banksia or Grass Tree.

Description:

Graceful and soft Poa is one of the most versatile native grasses you can grow in a coastal garden. Its fine, arching leaves catch the breeze and create a constant gentle movement that brings life and lightness to any planting. In summer it produces delicate, airy seed heads that float above the foliage.

Pigface (Carpobrotus rossii)

Layering Style: Mass Ground Cover

Thread through edges to create pockets of space between shrubs and where the garden meets paths, softening the hardscape and blurring the transition between built and planted elements.

Description:

Bold, bright, and virtually indestructible, Pigface is the ultimate coastal ground cover. Its thick, succulent leaves store water during dry spells and its vivid magenta flowers are incredibly eye catching. Few plants perform better on sandy banks or coastal slopes.
